Born in Lisbon in 1977. Native language Portuguese, proficient in English and French and intermediate Spanish. Graduated from Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Lisbon in 2003.
He started his professional life as trainee for two years at DIAMETRO in Lisbon, Portugal. In 2006, he made a place change to Belgium where he worked with CONIX ARCHITECTS in the Antwerp and Brussels offices until 2012. During this period he worked and completed various competition projects such as the 4th European School in Brussels and the Belgian Pavilion for the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. Also in Belgium, he collaborated with OPLA Architecture until 2013.
Additionally to 17 years of experience as an Architect and Urban Planner, he has also participated in several events, exhibitions and competitions since such as: the First Course on Patrimony Conservation in Santarem - Portugal, Architecture Summer School in Jyvaskyla - Finland, WAF2016 finalist in Singapore, attended the MIPIM 2018 as a delegate and expositor for MuuM, and presented the CER-Istanbul project by MUUM at the CityScape 2019 in Dubai, which was awarded the first prize in the category of “Residential - Low to Medium Rise Project (Future)”.
David Rato moved to Istanbul where he has been working in MUUM since 2013 as Design Director in projects such as: the LOSEV Natural Life Center, the Duzce Highschool Campus, the Talyapark Shopping Mall, KORDON Istanbul, OYAK Headquarters in Ankara, Shanghai Shopping Mall, New City of Turkistan Masterplan, new IGDAS Headquarters in Istanbul, the Republic of Chad Embassy in Ankara, the CER-Istanbul and the Radisson-Blu Hotel in the Multi-functional Complex of Minsk, in Belarus.
